Why Downspouts Are the Most Critical Part of Your Drainage System

Most homeowners focus on the gutter channel — the horizontal trough that collects rainwater from the roofline. But the downspout is the component that actually carries that water to the ground and away from the foundation. A perfectly clean gutter that connects to a blocked downspout will overflow at the connection point during every significant rainfall.

Downspout blockages are extremely common in the Lower Mainland because the downspout entry point acts as a natural collection zone for debris that has washed along the gutter toward the drain. Leaves, pine needles, compacted organic material, and moss frequently accumulate at downspout openings or pack into the elbow bends where the downspout angles away from the building face.

Signs Your Downspout Is Blocked

  • No water exits the downspout outlet during or after heavy rain
  • Gutter overflows specifically at the downspout connection, not along the run
  • Gurgling or bubbling sound from downspout during rainfall
  • Water staining on the wall or foundation below the downspout outlet
  • Standing water near the downspout at ground level after rain

What We Do

We flush every downspout with water from above during every gutter cleaning visit. If the flush reveals a blockage, we work to clear it mechanically before leaving. For severe or compacted blockages — common in downspouts that have not been serviced in several years — we use a clearing snake or sectional clearing to work through each elbow bend until the full run is open.

Downspout-only visits are available for properties where the gutters are otherwise clean but a specific drainage issue has developed between standard cleaning schedules.

Common Questions

Downspout Cleaning — FAQ

Common signs of a blocked downspout include: water overflowing from the gutter at the downspout connection point during rain, no water coming out the bottom of the downspout during or after rain, gurgling sounds from the downspout during rainfall, and water staining on the wall or foundation below the downspout outlet. If you hear no water movement during heavy rain, the downspout is almost certainly blocked.
The most common causes in the Lower Mainland are compacted leaf material that has washed from the gutter into the downspout opening, pine cone debris and needles that compact at the downspout elbow bends, moss that loosens from rooflines and accumulates at downspout entry points, and occasionally bird nesting material. Downspout elbows — the angled bends near the top and bottom — are the most common blockage points.
Yes. A blocked downspout causes the connected gutter section to overflow during any significant rainfall. That overflow water lands immediately adjacent to the foundation and, over time, erodes soil, saturates fill, and can work into foundation cracks or through floor plates. In areas with high water tables like Richmond and Delta, even moderate overflow can create basement moisture problems.
We flush downspouts from the top using pressurized water. If there is a blockage that water pressure does not clear, we use a plumber's snake or mechanical clearing tool to dislodge it. For downspouts with multiple elbow bends (common on two-storey homes), we work section by section until the full run is confirmed clear.
Yes. Downspout flushing is included in every standard gutter cleaning service we provide. We flush each downspout with water after clearing the gutters to confirm the full system is flowing. A blockage found at that stage is cleared as part of the service. Downspout-only visits are also available if your gutters are already clean but you are experiencing drainage issues.
